On 24th August 2018, my life changed forever. I replied to a tweet looking from Roshan Varma looking for fellow Cabbies who wanted to lose weight get fit then climb Kilimanjaro a year later. Cabbies do Kilimanjaro was born. Now the hard work began.
I took Be Military Fit up on their kind offer of free training. It was very tough at first but after a few weeks, I got right into it. I upped my sessions to 3 a week and the weight started to drop off me.
The training walks in the Peak District and Snowdon were a taste of things to come.
By August 2019 I was 5 stone lighter and able to successfully complete the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge in 11 hours and 43 minutes. I was now fitter than I had ever been and full of confidence for our attempt at Kilimanjaro.
On 3rd October 2019 I successfully summitted Mount Kilimanjaro but can honestly say that I just about made it. Myself and Daren were both absolutely exhausted and struggled to get down from Uhuru Peak. Of course, we have done the most sensible thing and planned our return for next year!! Only this time we will climb Kilimanjaro’s little sister Mount Meru (14,500 feet) before going straight back to the base of Kilimanjaro and meeting as many taxi drivers as possible and taking them to the summit.
I could do with dropping another 2 stone before we go so the hard work is not going to stop.
I will be 56 when we go which proves age is just a number.
